Grants:
Congratulations to Penny Stroening, 2011 Women's Fund Artist of the Year. Penny is a self-taught watercolorist. She chose "Blushing Tulips" because of its relevance to the Women's Fund of Greater La Crosse and their focus on helping women.
"I planted a tulip bed and was rewarded the following spring with a lovely display of blossoms. I prematurely cut the plants after the blossoms were done and was devastated the following spring when only one tulip bloomed. I nurtured this bed and this last year I had the most beautiful display of tulips dancing and smiling in the breeze. They stood tall and strong. I felt a connection between the nurturing of my tulips and the nurturing that the Women's Fund does for local women and girls," says Penny.

Congratulations to 2011 Women’s Fund Junior Artist of the Year, Chantel Blakely. Chantel is a student at Logan Middle School and loves to draw, paint and sew. She is creative in making things out of ordinary everyday items and aspires to be an artist. "I picked this painting because it's like the girls are blooming out of the flower and they are happy they are out so they are dancing," says Chantel.
Congratulations also to 2011 Women’s Fund Junior Artist of the Year, Kendall Fowler. Kendall is a student at Lincoln Middle School who is involved in tennis, basketball, soccer and orchestra. "Art to me is an expression of strong emotions. In this painting I tried to express personal growth through an organization like the Women’s Fund. I think what the Women’s Fund does for people is amazing so I’m glad to have had the opportunity to express a tiny part of what they do for women and families in our community," says Kendall.

Here's how your gift is changing lives every day:

Roberta, a 37 year old African American woman from Chicago, came into the Women's Clothes Closet this spring originally looking for dresses to wear to church. A few weeks later she came back very excited because she had just been hired at Chileda and needed clothing for work. Five weeks later she returned to thank us and to let us know that she and her husband had just moved into a house a few blocks away. They now were able to reunite their family and bring their children who had been living in Chicago with relatives to La Crosse.

Her employer has a dress code and she is required to wear skirts. Clothing from the Women's Clothes Closet helps this divorcee who does not get child support and earns $8.00/hr stretch her tight budget to support her growing boys.
